The purpose of the course is to assist certified music teachers to:

1. Connect music reading skills, musicianship to `ukulele ensemble playing (including improvisation). The playing techniques include melody picking, chord strumming, and solo playing.
2. Collect and perform quality `ukulele music literature to establish `ukulele orchestra programs.
3. Compare MENC 1994 Music Standards, HCPSIII Music Standards, and 2014 NCCAS Standards.
4. Explore, experiment, adapt and reflect different teaching `ukulele content and strategies that can be used to assess the new “Harmonizing Instruments Strand” - `Ukulele Music Core State Standards, which related to music literacy.
5. Provide opportunities to achieve musical proficiency in these Four Artistic Processes: Creating, Performing, Responding and Connecting;

At the end of the course, participants will exhibit different methods for assessing the unique challenges faced in artistic achievement by constructing SLOs/Rubrics that assess each of the Core standards. A portfolio with reflections, captions and a standards-based unit with formative and summative assessments will be required.

Applicants must have the music reading skill equivalent to that of the standard two year college level music theory and aural training courses. At the barest minimum, even those with at least two years of band or orchestra experience or at least two years of private classical piano studies could qualify. `Ukulele playing ability is not required as this skill will be taught in the course of the workshops. Attendees must have their own `ukuleles and tuners. Prior approval from teacher’s principal or supervising administrator is needed to use this course for reclassification (Form 201a).

Teachers must attend all sessions and complete the Learning Portfolio in order to qualify for the two (2) PD credits offered.

• Aug 26: Portfolio (Chet-Yeng)
