MUSIC AND LANGUAGE ARTS ARTS BENCHMARKS: Mixing It Up in the K-2 Inclusive Classroom, 3-PDE credits

Purpose

The purpose of the course is to integrate music into language arts in K-2 classrooms, including teaching students with disabilities. All activities are geared towards language arts and music benchmarks.

At the end of the course, participants will exhibit different methods for assessing the unique challenges faced in artistic achievement by constructing SLOs/Rubrics that assess each of the Core standards. A portfolio with reflections, captions and a standards-based unit with formative and summative assessments will be required.

Participants will demonstrate the ability to integrate music into language arts in a K-2 elementary classroom. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to use songs, movement, recorded music, musical instruments and music reading activities to teach language arts benchmarks focusing on communication, language development and literacy. Active Music Making approaches such as Dalcroze, Kodaly and Orff are also included in the workshop. A special emphasis will also be placed on ways to include students with ADHD and language delays. Participants will be able to relate music activities to the Hawaii Content & Performance Standards (HCPS), 2014 Music Core NCCAS Standards, and Common Core: Language Arts Standards. Assignments will cover activity and assessment development, lesson and curriculum planning, the needs of students with disabilities, and how music skills are sequenced in the K-2 classroom.
